Why is America The Land of Opportunity?

What has happened to our great country? Our country currently ranks last in the industrialized world in healthcare and education. We now all know this, but what can we do to change things around. Why do the immigrants to our country always consider us the land of opportunity? Why do they always take advantage of this while many of our own children do not?

How did our country become one of entitlements in which many young people expect everything to be given to them without working? This is what socialism is. How did we ever get to a place where reading and writing is no longer admired, respected and required? Most of us elderly during the years of learning cursive can at least read the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. Won’t it be sad when that is no longer true.

We must do everything in our power to try to stop this backslide in education. I recently ran into two college students from Nepal on separate occasions. I asked them why they came here to go to college. They said nearly everyone in Nepal formerly went to the United States if they had the ability and means to receive advanced education here.

What was even more interesting is that both students voiced the same thoughts regarding trends. They both informed me that almost all of friends and extended family members now go to China for advanced education. I find that remarkable. Whoever dreamed that China would one day be the destination for advanced education, chosen over the United States of America? These two young Nepalese males voiced the same thought.

It is time we rethink education in the United States. We are also behind numerous third world countries in healthcare. Our rapid progression to the bottom in healthcare and education is parallel. They have both sunk to the bottom of the industrialized world in a continual downward spiral at the same rate of fall. A short while ago we ranked 37th in the world in both education and healthcare. The relationship seems clear. If this remains a constant, we will probably have the same problems regarding entrepreneurs and new scientific development.
