Complacency, I Died of Complacency

I was just editing and re-reading a paragraph in a book I wrote called God’s Tiniest Angel and the Last Unicorn that I thought you may find interesting.

It reads as follows, Complacency is great. Our children who cannot think for themselves are allowed to die from diseases all but nearly wiped out because their parents were complacent. Can you picture the little tombstone epitaph, “I died of complacency. My parents were smart, just complacent.” Again, we learn nothing from history. Do you ever wonder why we bother to write down our history if we learn nothing from it? It always seems to repeat itself.

History is now repeating itself once more. Once again, our children are dying of infectious diseases. Think of all the recent measles outbreaks. It was not that many years ago in our country that infectious disease was the number one cause of death in America. In 1900 four of the top ten causes of death in children were infectious diseases. Isn’t it incredible to think that in the modern-day when infectious diseases are all but wiped out in the United States of America, now parents are so dumb, uneducated, or complacent as to think immunizations and vaccinations are no longer necessary? Now all the top causes of death are non-infectious. Automobile accidents are the number one cause of death, firearms are the second leading cause of death, and the United States of America ranks one in the world in this. The odds of a child being killed by a firearm in the USA is 36 times higher than in any other high-income country. Cancer is the third leading cause of death. Parents stop to think. Your newborns and children can not do that for you. Are you willing to bet that young life, they will not die of an infectious disease? That is probably not a wise decision. You may have loved ones in your life that have auto-immune disorders, cancer, impaired immunity from chemotherapy or AIDS. It is not just your child you are taking a chance on life for. It is also all of these people around you. If your child is not immunized or vaccinated and does not get one of these illnesses, it is because of herd immunity based on the fact that people around them are immunized or vaccinated. Think of that. Get your children immunized America.
